SPIN Magazine’s Top 40 of 2010 is up!

Stereogum-
One thing I like about SPIN’s yearly lists: The writing that goes along with them is usually pretty great, even when I don’t care too much about the record(s). They’re also pretty resistant to the lemming effect, hence the inclusion of albums by Robert Plant, Neil Young, and Teenage Fanclub alongside Crystal Castles, Glasser, and Wavves. It’s like Rolling Stone’s hipper younger sibling who still takes some tips from big bro. They also showed respect to M.I.A.’s /\/\/\Y/\, something I predict more people will ultimately be doing more of over the next few years (call it The Liars Effect). You should be pretty familiar with the guy at No. 1.

20 MGMT – Congratulations
19 No Age – Everything In Between
18 Superchunk – Majesty Shredding
17 Beach House – Team Dream

You can’t buy me love, but you can buy the Beatles on iTunes

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

It slipped out a bit early, but the Beatles complete back catalog is available through iTunes. The individual albums clock in at $12.99 while a boxset of the Beatles’ entire work is available for $149. Individual tracks are $1.29 each. The boxset includes all 13 of the band’s studio albums, Past Masters and an iTunes LP with mini-documentaries, photos, notes and more. The mini-documentaries were initially featured with last year’s CD boxset and are also included on the individual albums. The band’s mono collection does not appear to be available at this time.

The iTunes page has a number of features, including ads, a highlight reel and the first-ever Beatles’ concert on U.S. soil in 1964.

Unlike the U2 release a few years ago, this doesn’t appear to have an official iPod associated with it. For that, you’ll need to see if one of these sets are still available on Ebay.

Edit (9:58 a.m.): Apple has now updated the iTunes Store’s front page to officially announce the release.

Damon Albarn making next Gorillaz album completely on an iPad

.reeder-article a { color: #111; border-bottom: 1px dashed #111; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; }

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

Musicians love the iPad — it’s a powerful computer with an intuitive interface, and that turns Apple’s tablet into one of the best musical instruments (both real and virtual) around. Now, Damon Albarn, formerly of Blur and now frontman for the band Gorillaz, has become a fan as well. He tells NME that he’s making a brand new record completely on the revolutionary and magical device. “I hope I’ll be making the first record on an iPad,” he said. “I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I’ve made a completely different kind of record.”

That sounds interesting — the album is apparently an official Gorillaz album (Albarn frequently collaborates with all kinds of artists for the “band’s” music), and Albarn says it should be out sometime soon, “before Christmas.” We’ll have to look forward to it — all of the iPad music we’ve heard so far sounds great, and it’ll be intriguing to see what kinds of decisions Albarn makes just by working on an iPad.

Kinect sells 1 million

.reeder-article a { color: #111; border-bottom: 1px dashed #111; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; }

GameSpot’s Xbox 360 News, Screenshots, Movies, Reviews, Previews, Downloads, and Features

Microsoft says Xbox 360’s motion-sensing add-on hits platinum milestone within 10 days of US launch.

Prior to the launch of Kinect, Microsoft projected lofty sales for the Xbox 360’s new motion-sensing add-on, saying that it would sell some 5 million units by year’s end. The first million are now in the bank.

Today, Microsoft announced that Kinect has sold 1 million units worldwide in its first 10 days on the market. Kinect went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European roll-out occurring November 10 and Asian release following on November 18. The software giant also reiterated its 5 million-unit projection for the Xbox 360 peripheral, expressing optimism over next week’s Black Friday, better known as the busiest shopping day of the year.

Microsoft did not break out the ways in which gamers purchased their new Kinects. Currently, the system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $149, a hefty premium over the device’s $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 configuration and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 load out. Both bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games expected to be available for the system before year’s end.

Kinect’s sales success is unsurprising, giving the substantial marketing campaign Microsoft has launched to support it. According to reports, Microsoft has allotted $500 million to promote the device.
